Buzzy is a portable device that vibrates on our skin and is about the size of a computer mouse. It comes with an extra ice pack that soothes the pain from any minor sharp pain such as splinters, stings, and needles. The brain closes the gate on pain signals when nerves detect non-painful signals like vibration or cold.
It is an FDA-approved Class I (over-the-counter) device.
Buzzy® device
-
Buzzy confuses our body's nerves and draws attention away from the poke, providing a natural and drug-free pain relief. It functions like rubbing a bumped elbow relieves pain, running water cools a burn, and immersing your hand in freezing water eases discomfort.
-
When utilizing this, a staff worker, a member of the patient's family, or even the patient themselves will hold the buzzy close to the area of skin where the needle will be inserted. Once the needle has been removed, this will also be removed.
-
Children older than 12 months are the only ones who can use Buzzy; younger children will receive the other form of pain medication.
